When I visited Vilakazi street in Soweto for a tour of Mandela’s house over the weekend, I was inspired by the fact that this very humble place is the only one that has produced 2 Nobel laureates in the world’s history. These two laureates Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu didnt grow up in Sandton or such other posh places, they came from a place of difficulties and poverty. Further more that house bears memories of many painful moments that Mandela and Winnie went through in their fight against apartheid. The experience reminded me that in most cases challenges in life produce greatness as they strengthen us to be able to fight and overcome all odds. Sometimes we are tempted to envy people who seem to have the best things in life and many times we wish that we could have it all easy. But we forget that gold has to go through fire for it to be refined. While growing in the village, we used to grow spinach. As part of the process we would get cow dung and mix it with soil around the spinach. Cow dung does not have the best of smells and its actually very messy. But it fertilized the spinach and at the end of it all we would have healthy green spinach that would water everyone’s mouth. Same with problems, they don’t look like the best thing and they are at times very messy, but at the end of it all they develop in us stamina and a character that is hard to break. Never allow your difficult background to discourage you. Let the challenges that such a background sets up build and produce a great person in you. A would changer! A history maker!
