When I was a little girl; before the age of 6; my family lived on Vine St. in O’Fallon, IL. Our house was on the corner across from Diamond #1. During the cold winters, my father played with my brother Dennis and I in the basement of our rental home. We actually built a country side with mountains out of sheet saturated in plaster paris; evergreen trees carefully cut from sponges and sprayed green and train depots as well as other building out of popsicle sticks and wood. My father had a electric train set and the engine blew steam! We spent hours in the basement playing with the train, making root beer and playing hide and seek as a family. My parents never missed a teacher’s meeting, school event or sports event. David Seipp helped me learn how to ride a bike when my father was out of town on TDY. My father built us a “fort” to play in behind the garage in the back yard. When I broke a window at Paula Adams basement, my father came and fixed it. As I grew, he was always there – there was the pony on Dale Ave., clubs I belonged to before I could drive and all my friends who he made friends with too. He loved spending time with “the boys”…Brad Meinkoth, Jeff Hunter, Jim Eisenhart and Tommy Thompson. He teased Julia Wunder every chance he got. Dad was always there to listen and to “fix” things. That was Dad – “Daddy fix” was my favorite phrase growing up. But on this Father’s Day and Father’s Day forever more – my father is in heaven and he can’t “fix” anymore. Father, I honor you on this holiday and EVERY day. You were my best friend and favorite playmate. I was blessed to have you in my life for 46 years. Happy Father’s Day, Dad. I am a better human being for having known you. P.S. Give Mom my love.
