When I was a teen librarian, I worked for a woman who absolutely refused to let me order any of the Clique books, even though I daily had girls and their mothers coming in and requesting them. I could only ILL them. This same woman had And Tango Makes Three cataloged in nonfiction, in a parenting collection, dewey number 306.738. And she refused to buy headphones for our computers even though the teens needed to add sound and video to school projects. She didn’t like the noise. These are all examples of restricting minors’ access to information in ways that we don’t often hear about. These examples came out of a desire to avoid conflict parents, “protect” the children, and avoid annoyance to the gate keeper, but unlike book challenges or book banning, these acts are perpetrated by the very people who are supposed to be fighting for equal access for everyone. Do you have a similar story? I’d like to hear it.
