When I was in college, I went without a job for a while so that I could spend 50+ hours a week outside of class on starting my business. I remember sleeping on a broken air mattress for a year that had bubbled up in the middle because I couldnt afford to buy a real mattress. I remember days of buying groceries and biking home in the rain with the bags on each handle trying to keep them from swinging into my spokes and ripping open all over the sidewalk because I couldnt afford a car. Today, Im thankful to those that believed in me and gave me money when I had none, so that I could pursue my dreams. Im thankful to Edson Student Entrepreneur Initiative for giving me $10,000 to start my first real business in college but more importantly the courage and validation to quit my job and eventually start Yazamo. Im thankful to Eric Crown for his scholarship that helped me get a new laptop from which Yazamo has been created. And Im thankful to many others that have supported me along the journey. Im also thankful to entrepreneurs like Edson and Crown for teaching me how to pay it forward. When we started Yazamo, we found a mission that has become very important to us. Brian Tracy said, The quality of your thinking determines the quality of your life. I believe that you can create anything that you put your mind to with enough hustle and creativity. We choose to support Kiva because they facilitate loans to entrepreneurs that are trying to make their lives and the lives of their communities better all around the world. Kiva is an easy way to give back and support entrepreneurship and innovation. Weve been doing it for going on 3 years now. Oh and its a loan not a handout... you get your money back.
