When I was in college, I worked at SAMs. It paid well, I started - TopicsExpress

When I was in college, I worked at SAMs. It paid well, I started at 6.80 at a time when the minimum wage had just been moved to $4. Every year, I volunteered to work the holidays not just because I was a student, who needed money, but more importantly,I wanted people to be home with their families. In those days, the holiday meant the evening before we closed for the big day. Since I always had roommates, on the holiday, Id make a big dinner and wed invite whoever else was stuck at Hogwarts to join us. But, back to working..... While I worked at SAMs, Id get .75 - 1.00 raises and towards the end, I was making ten an hour. A princely sum back then, I assure you. On holiday eves, Id get time and a half! So while my motive for volunteering wasnt entirely altruistic, it was a part of it. I was fortunate enough to have a say in my schedule, lots didnt. By the time I left SAMs, raises had maxed at a quarter, overtime was a fiction, and time and a half abolished. So, when I think back on my time in retail, as an hourly employee..... The landscape was entirely different than now. I say all this because I want to give context to my plea..... Ive worked retail, worked hard, and been well taken care of in return. This is not the case now. When you shop on thanksgiving day, each face you see is a face YOU, the consumer, is pulling from their family on a holiday that is supposed to celebrate family and blessings. That cashier could be a college student, but it is more likely a mom or dad, struggling to afford Christmas for their children. By shopping today, you vote with your dollar and send the message to corporate America that this is ok. THIS IS NOT OK. You wonder where the holiday spirit is as you emptily shop for cheap items made in sweatshops? You say Jesus is the reason while you plan your holiday meal according to sales flyers? You say you wish you could make a difference? You can. Dont shop on thanksgiving. Black Friday is YOUR business..... Today is a day to reflect on our lives and spend time with family. Wait a day to get that super duper wide screen TV or additional laptop and help out those who have no say. I implore you. Happy thanksgiving.
