When I was in high school, I participated in a provincial Science - TopicsExpress

When I was in high school, I participated in a provincial Science Olympiad. I wasnt very good but I managed to reach the finals where I lost. Afterwards I celebrated the moral victory because I wasnt even suppose to get that far. My mom stood up and said to me: There was a winner and a loser today, the winner has a trophy in their hand; the losers do not. There are no moral victories for people who expect to win. Moral victories are for people whose egos need to imagine they won, even when all the evidence is to the contrary. There are no moral victories in ass whipping. Slavery movies like The Butler, The Help, Twelve Years A Slave, have a similar theme that has a tumultuous beauty: The Moral Victory- our capacity as black people to maintain our soulforce even in the midst of the most inhumane circumstances. The downside of these Moral Victory stories is this: moral victory is what you get when youve lost. When you win you dont need the moral victory because you got The Victory. White Supremacy and its entertainment wing have an investment in getting us to accept moral victories as victories, while they hold up and celebrate having won the game. I think one of the reasons Black folks are so enamored with movies about slavery is that for them its a kind of psychological moral victory in the battle with racism and white supremacy. But look around you... and you will see what my mom saw: There are no moral victories in ass whipping. Which is what white supremacy is laying on us. And your bronze medal is not a trophy lol. Winning in real life is winning, all the rest is our collusion in our delusion.
