When i was a child my parents encouraged me to join a youth group run by a relative from the basement of there house, they were Open Brethren, more conservative than the church i regularly attended on sundays with my family, still a slightly less extreme splinter group of the notorious closed Brethren, old school christianity. In the basement there was a stage and many colourful banners, crests and mottos on the walls. There were great ornate flags on standards, maybe five or six of them across the stage and there was a ceremony where we stood and pledged allegiance to god , the flags and the country. Each flag had an associated verse we were taught to memorise and recite in front of the congregation. I hadnt thought about this in nearly 2 decades. How frighteningly patriotic ,rightwing and militant a thing to encourage a child to do .. so bizarre . Creepy Christian Cult
