‘When installing the exhibition, Arakis Eastern Sky series had an effect on me that reminded me of my encounters with great landscape paintings. For me, the photos hint at iconic art works like those of Caspar David Friedrich or William Turner, in touching upon ‘the sublime’ -a philosophical term that refers to the overwhelming aesthetic sense of awe. Also, some of the Skyscape colour photographs, presented in the same room, made me think of the night scapes of Vincent van Gogh... It was quite amazing, and surprising! Like many artists, Araki wanted to study the light. But endlessly photographing the sky was a way of mourning his lost loved ones too, a way of trying to grasp the afterlife. A way of finding meaning. The muted atmosphere of the room contrasts with the raw multiplicity of the Diary and polaroids rooms, which cover another major development that followed the death of his wife. Still, you’ll find a few skies there, too. With Araki, a reminder of the afterlife is always present.’ -Foam curator Zippora Elders #ArakiFoam
