When joining a political party it is very important for you to know for yourself what kind of candidate you are. Do you have the knowledge and expertise to function as an Island Council Member, or maybe your ambition and expertise in to be a Commissioner, or maybe you can be a valued Executive Assistant. Whatever your ability maybe, it is good to be aware of that fact. When joining a political party you really need to know from beforehand which one of the aforementioned positions you are aspiring to occupy. Is the position that your are aspiring to occupy available to you should that party get elected into government. These are just some of the issues one should clarify before joining a political party I think that there are several ways to get the information you are looking for. One way to find out is to ask the party board or party leader. You should also know that the laws pertaining to the election have changed. You position on the party list is very important. You must not allow yourself to be caught off guard, like our politicians were in de election held after 10-10-10. If you get 1000 votes on your name and you are last on your party’s list you will not automatically be in government. That was an important change in the election procedures. How can you want to run a country and not know the election procedures, on how to get elected. The positions in government are allotted to the persons heading the list. If you want to join a political party you should at least know what number you will be on the party’s list . It’s time to wake up the vote getters! The vote getters needs to know what their roll is in the party. A vote getter is not necessarily a person that is capable of holding any function in government. We have so many parties on the island and most of them still cant even tell you who will be on their list. And thats because they are still hunting vote getters. Now nothing wrong with being a vote getter if you know why you on that list, and that all you are to that party is to pull votes. If today January 13th, I dont know if I want to be on a party list or not how will I be ready for March 18th. If it’s only the new political parties out there hunting scraping for qualified candidates I could say that they trying to make a difference. But as far as I see the parties that are out there scraping and hunting for qualified candidates are parties that have existed for many elections. Of course each party needs a strong list of candidates, but aspiring candidates need to know that their affiliation to the party is one reason purpose and that is to get votes for the party and nothing else. Some parties scraping at all cost even tearing families apart. Now I do agree that traditionally people on Statia voted for a particular party because a family was a member of that party. Whether or not that party did good or bad, the only reason for voting was because of family. That type of voting needs to stop. On the other hand if you don’t vote for family and you only vote because this particular party promise to do me or our family members a special favor, and the rest of Statia can go to hell in a waste basket, you are not better than the one voting just because of family. That also needs to stop. People stop being fooled but these last minute politicians. Island elections are every 4 years so why 2 months before election date the party list is still a secret or worse yet maybe the party have not plan. If you ask me I am of the opinion that some parties are waiting to see what the other parties plan look like, and then use somebody else’s ideas and visions to adjust and if need be add or make changes as needed to important or relevant topics they did not have in their own plan. That tell me there is a lack of expertise, knowledge, commitment and vision if that is how a party contesting a government election operates. How can a party like that negotiate with politician in the Hague. Some parties plan are so vague and empty, all they have in their plan is that they will address a problem, but have no broad substance how they intend to do that. It is not enough to tell the people we don’t agree with the health care system for example. I don’t only want to hear you see I will fix it if elected into government. We have heard that story over and over again. Where I am concern you have to tell me and the people should demand that you tell us exactly how you intend to fix the health care issues. The health care issue is just one of the many issues that we are face with. People this election is crucial because 4 more years like the last 4 during which we had 4 different governments is just not putting Statia on the positive map. Seeing that trend in government Statia’s interest is just not a priority. This year is evaluation year and whether we are for status quo or more autonomy we will need people in the island council that wont just get dress everyday just to oppose each other’s ideas. We better have people there who want and are able to work for the betterment of Statia.
