When my friend Jan Jennings was in the Hospice room at Standing - TopicsExpress

When my friend Jan Jennings was in the Hospice room at Standing Stone. Something happened that I will never forget. There was a resident who was dying, she had no family with her. As it was very near to Jans death I was in and out several times during the day and night. At the time Joyce Hicks was running the facility. I saw her several times during the day and then I left to get dinner and do some laundry. I came back very late that night. As I walked by the dying residents room on the way to Jans room, I saw Joyce sitting next to the bed holding this persons hand. I realized that she was there so she wouldnt have to die alone. She had been there since early morning. Her ankles were swollen to twice their size, but she never left until it was over. Joyce invested more than just her mind and effort she invested her heart. When my time comes to need constant care. I hope there is a Joyce there for me, to see through my illness and my age, to respect the person that I was. The story this taxi drivers story reminded me of what Joyce did that night. Joyce Hicks became my hero that night.
