When people are feeling bad they search for ways to quiet the mind; to turn off their brains. You cannot stop your brain from generating thoughts. Seemingly random thoughts will always be generated and when these thoughts bother us or have hooks into us then we start to blame ourselves for having them in the first place. We fight against them. Stop fighting! Meditation and being present/mindful helps train your brain to just let the thoughts be as they come up without judgement. Also creating counter thoughts to these negative assumptions helps deal with these automatic negative thoughts by creating balanced thinking that can be used to reason your way away from the hooks or beliefs you have in them. The thought is never the problem; the belief you have in them which hooks you IS the reason you get so emotional when they come up. The next time these thoughts come up then say to yourself thats interesting however there are other ways of looking at that situation or There may be reasons why this person reacted this way towards me that I may not be aware of... or This in not 100% true 100% of the time.. Now guide yourself back to being present - use your breath if you need to - and just enjoy what is in front of you right at this very moment. When you shift your focus to NOW you no longer worry about the future or past. This process or being present and refocusing on the present when needed, is like riding a bicycle. At first you are very wobbly and shaky and even fall down. The more you practice fixing your balance etc... the more you learn to automatically adjust the balance as you go and before long its habit and you no longer have to think about it. You simply enjoy riding your bike. Optimistic thinking is the SAME. Just keep at it and before long you will not be aware you are doing it - just like you were likely not aware how negative your thinking was until you looked at it.
