When stranger calls. Ive been torn between attempting to hold - TopicsExpress

When stranger calls. Ive been torn between attempting to hold back client info and bragging but wanting to share the magic of my week. So heres my tell: Ive gotten a lot of random scams sent my way, email, snail mail, hand written letters. Scams, lies, the justification of pessimism. Then last week at 4am an email, with strange english, from an unknown sender, from a foreign country, directed me to cross state lines to show off my expertise and process. Huh? Its a great story, what happens next. But first while I was still trying to tell if the emails offer was real, I got the call to go help a famous liquor spin some graphics for a new campaign. And in there also was a quick gig recording an amazing talent in an live show. Two days in an manhattan agency later, I dress up the liquor brand like a attractive virgin waiting on prom night. Days ahead of schedule. Everyone smiles. Cognac for all. That night I end up in the lower east side, recording a short session with an amazing musician. The next day my cab pulls up in the chill wee hours within spitting distance of a river in New England, at a childrens museum, answering the call of the foreign emails. What happen next was a lucrative council season with a huge corporation. Somewhere in there I became a councilor, a copyrighter, and the chief idea fountain. Weary, an extra night(cause the asked me to come back a second day) later, I wander through Grand Central, battling exhaustion, food coma, and then the yelling confuses me. Protestors, Ive worked most everyday of the protests these last weeks. Now theyre in front of me, screaming their hearts and throats out in front of that iconic clock in the center of the Central. And now Im on the floor. Happily. Staring up at the painted teal night, its artificial constellations glowing light and gold leaf. My heart pounding and head swirling from the oxygen Im shooting out of myself to join the shouted chorus statement no justice no peace. Laying in my stupidly expensive corporate clothes, soothing my protestors scream with corporate bottled water. Then, my phone begins to dance in my pocket. It does that for just about every social media site I send something to. Id been positing pics of the growing protest and die-in dutifully to twitter and beyond. Now my phone was shaking. On it, a number Id never seen, no name to be found. Do u make videos? it asked cryptically. My imagination took over from there. Next on the random train; a long texted convo with LA about an up and coming talent who needed to be shot the next day at renown music corporation. I basically said, sure, but who is this? Their name provided no answers. We continued, my fee offered, the shoot was booked, with this caveat, my Cali dispatcher couldnt say when or where the talent would be, just to be ready. I got so ready for the unknown I packed three bags of gear, looked like an extra on the Expendabilites (albeit snazzily dressed) and called for backup. Ten hours later Im waiting in a somewhat infamous office surrounded by beautiful people, my creative partner and I setting lights, dressing the place and readying the cameras. The shoot was effortless. Because it never happened. What did happen was a quick screening of my recent work for some new connections and an introduction to a world of new possibilities. Apologies for being vague, and long, its been this kind of week. My point for all this is 8 days ago, none of this was in play. 8 days later, I received introductions to five industries of people, all from the unexpected places, all relevant business. And I was rewarded financially and with things more valuable. And it all comes from optimism. Being open to those calls as being positives, despite odds and fears that they could be negative. And having created for myself the skills, work habits and actual work/content, to be able to act on those opportunities whenever they turned out to be existing. This week is my justification for informed optimism aka faith. #NamMyohoRengeKyo Next week, London.
