When the Holbrook bypass was completed recently, we all breathed a sigh of relief that it was all finally done and that we now had the trucks going around us, getting rid of both noise and air pollution from the main street and making the whole town that little bit safer. A plan of a great main street facelift was begun, and all the residents happily looked ahead to the next chapter in our small towns history post-bypass. Now, not a few months later, Caltex and various developers are proposing a huge truck stop/service centre to be located within the town limits at the southern end of Holbrook (currently the site of the second Holbrook Bakery). Thats right, a proposal to BRING TRUCKS BACK INTO OUR TOWNSHIP is being seriously considered by the local council! A large truck stop/service centre has always been on the cards, but the original plans were that it would be located out next to the freeway at the north end of town, in a set-up similar to the Glenrowan BP/McDonalds service centres. This proposed truck stop/service centre would not only attract highway traffic to stop near our town and dramatically increase the possibility of them venturing in to see it for themselves, and a welcome resting/change over point for truck drivers everywhere, but it would also provide valuable jobs for the local people. The majority of the town were all for the idea, and awaited its approval and construction. In a last minute move, a new proposal has been submitted that puts the service centre within town limits on a small site at the southern end. This move is a purely financial decision, with certain people looking to make money and others looking to save it. There are many reasons why this site is unsuitable, including: * A return of semi-trailers and B-doubles to our small and newly refaced streets once again, along with the noise and air pollution that comes with them. * A severe impact on the residents in the vicinity, both in lifestyle and property values. * Extreme noise pollution that is a natural recourse from running a truck stop/service centre 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. * Increased flooding risk to nearby businesses and residences due to the natural fall of the land in this particular site, as well as layout of the truck stop/service centre. * Catastrophic impact of several nearby locally-owned and operated businesses, well established in the community. * A great eyesore of a first impression for anyone visiting the town and coming off at the Albury St exit. plus many more substantial issues............. There are two other sites where this truck stop/service centre can be built; the old APS site out on the old Hume highway north of town (about 30 seconds drive), and an expanse of empty land beside the new Wagga Rd freeway exit. Both of these sites are far more suited to what Caltex wants to build, both put it within easy reach of freeway traffic and trucks to come off and back on again, and both put it within easy access for locals to get out for work or to utilise the services, while not directly affecting the towns new quieter country lifestyle and image. It only makes sense! Please LIKE this page and get behind this movement. Share it around with your friends or on relevant pages. The safety and well-being of the newly-changing Holbrook and its faithful residents depends on YOU, and with enough support we can get this truck stop/service centre out on the new freeway where it belongs, and begin to enjoy the benefits it will bring to our town. THIS AFFECTS ALL RESIDENTS OF HOLBROOK, NOT JUST THE SOUTHSIDE LOCALS!
