When the coral trout wants to catch a fish thats gone into a space too small for it to reach, it recruits the moray eel, which can easily fit into tight spots, by pointing it in the direction of the hidden fish. Not all eels are team players, though — and in a new study, researchers discovered that the trout learned to pick the more helpful eels. Our study thus strengthens the case that a relatively small brain...does not preclude at least some fish species from possessing cognitive abilities that compare to or surpass those of apes, the researchers wrote, provided that the situation is ecologically relevant to them.
