When the local Pointe-Claire Chapters opened, it was like that. - TopicsExpress

When the local Pointe-Claire Chapters opened, it was like that. Lots of traffic, lots of chairs, and a Starbucks. Then, they started disallowing bringing non-paid books in the Starbucks. Then, they cut the number of chairs. But one other main thing, though, and I dont know which came first, Quebec provinces language laws forced them to increase the ratio of French-to-English books, despite the fact that English is the lingua franca of Montreals West Island area. The store nows carries only very limited inventory in each categories. In the late nineties, in one single year, I purchased for over 2 grands of books. I dont think I purchased for 100$ from them in the last four years. Some might blame Amazon, saying that the stores were used as showcases and that then, people would buy for cheaper on Amazon, but it was not entirely true. My guesstimate is that they reduced their inventory variety, per category, by a factor 4. While they used to have over a hundred different books on sailing and boats, they now carry a dozen or two at most last time I checked. Sure, they carry a much bigger inventory of French books, but who buys overpriced, under-researched French non-fiction books anyway? This article might interest Virginia Postrel
