When we are at are most vulnerable, we can also be at our most guarded. Several years ago I was at a low point in life. The “rock star” years of my life had gone into a tailspin and crash landed me in suburban Maine. I didnt feel like I had a lot of friends at that moment in my life, and I was pretty closed down to the ones I might have considered friends. In that dark place a singular paw came in to poke me...literally....she sat there and poked me, and poked me, and poked me with her paw until I would just forget my worries and pay attention to her...she was quite demanding. Her name was Cat...because, according to her, she was the best cat, she needed no other name. She would come sit next to me, and if I didnt pay attention to her, she would reach out and poke me with her paw. “Hey, pay attention!” I swear that Cat is the only thing that got me through those dark days...and we became very good friends...I could say she became my cat, but the truth would be more like, I became her human...she adopted me. Unfortunately, yesterday afternoon she passed away. It was quick, she was old, and the causes were natural. I am forever grateful for Cat. She truly was an amazing friend. At a time when I didnt want to be near anyone, she came in and demanded my attention...and she helped me to remember how to pay attention to someone other than myself. I was with her until the end, I stayed by her side most of the morning and was patting her as she took her last breaths yesterday afternoon. I hope that I was a comfort to her in her last moments on this planet as she was a comfort to me in sooo many of my lonely moments....and happy moments...and bored moments...and cuddly moments. Im thankful for the years we spent together. I love that cat and her armor piercing paws.
