When we practice karate as “budo”, we become “budo-ka”, - TopicsExpress

When we practice karate as “budo”, we become “budo-ka”, martial artist, and the purpose become larger than just protecting ourselves. A budo-ka uses the skill that is being taught to protect self, family or friends in the instance of extreme danger or unprovoked attack or to support law and order. Continuous study of karate as budo, keeping the above in mind; develop love for others, instead of just an egotistical love for ourselves. This is the core of “zen” philosophy – to get out of one’s self. Once we are able to come out of ourselves, we become fearless, and we develop a state of mind that cannot be interrupted or disturbed by outside distractions. “Kara” means empty that came from “mu” nothingness of “zen” philosophy. This nothingness or emptiness gives us freedom from psychological obstruction posed by ego or fear. With this barrier removed, altruistic love of others and our ability to take decision is greatly improved.
