When we think of damage, we often think of heat damage or coloring. One thing we often overlook is that sleeping on cotton pillowcases does daily, irreversible damage to hair. Cotton is not a soft fabric and curly hair is naturally dry and often coarse. Therefore, combining these two will spell disaster for your strands. When we sleep on cotton our curls are doing battle with the pillowcase, rubbing up against it causing friction and breakage. If you have kinky curly hair this is especially harmful to your strands. Cotton also sucks the moisture out of your hair. The bottom line is: sleeping on cotton will damage your hair. The good news is that damage and dryness caused by sleeping on cotton pillowcases can be easily remedied. It’s as simple as investing in a satin alternative. Because satin has no abrasive elements, it does not cause breakage or split ends and it doesn’t dry hair out.
