When you gain a friend, first test him, and be not too ready to trust him. For one sort of friend is a friend when it suits him, but he will not be with you in time of distress. Another is a friend, a boon companion, who will not be with you when sorrow comes. When thing go well, he is your other self, and lords it over servants; but if you are brought low, he turns against you and avoids meeting you…. Bring not every man into your house, for many are the snares of the crafty one; though he seem like a bird in a cage, yet like a spy he will pick out weak spots… as long as the rich man can use you he will enslave you, but when you are exhausted he will abandon you.. He who insults a friend break up the friendship… from him who brings harm to his friend all will stand aloof who hear of it.
