Whenever we talk about racism, someone inevitably says the following: You say the black experience as though its some overall thing that describes the lives of every black person. Because youre racist. This exposes a particularly pernicious form of racism, in which white people inherently disbelieve black people. Thousands -- literally thousands -- of black scholars agree that there *is* an overall thing appropriately called the black experience. The reason for this agreement is a mountain of hard data clearly demonstrating that nationwide, at every level of society, black people are treated worse than white people. To be certain, if there was someone who was best qualified to evaluate racism, it would be someone who understands the black experience in America. That would be... you know... a black person. And black people -- not to mention black scholars -- are in near unanimous agreement on the scope and breadth of the black experience and racism. White people like to masquerade as racial champions by exposing reverse racism, as if it was somehow demeaning to the oppressed to overestimate their oppression. In reality, if white people suddenly acquired an over-developed sense of their own racism, and went too far in trying to equalize the experience of blacks in America, perhaps that would cause a bit of inequality for white people. But until the data shows that the gap between whites and blacks is at least near parity, we can probably put that concern to rest.
