Where should you move to pursue an acting career? I am asked this - TopicsExpress

Where should you move to pursue an acting career? I am asked this question so often and I want to address this dilemma that so many actors are facing. When I started out acting in the 80s there was no question about moving to Los Angeles (or New York). Eventually there was something called Runaway Production. It started in Vancouver, Canada and then New Mexico. Now films and television shows are made all over the place, mostly in New Orleans and Atlanta. Of course other places have exploded such and London, Toronto, Prague, and many other great locations. Where should you move? There is no cut-and-dry answer in this day and age. If you look at todays major feature films and network television shows casting of starring roles, it is easy to see that the vast majority of those roles are cast in Los Angeles (and NY). But many actors are also being seen in those locations where production is taking place. The production companies are almost exclusively based in Los Angeles with satellite offices set up in these other locations. The top casting executives and talent agents are still in Los Angeles (and NY). However, there are many great casting directors locally that do audition talent locally. There are now more great opportunities in these locations than ever, such as acting classes, headshot photographers, etc. Now I am talking about speaking roles. As far as extras are concerned, there are now many more opportunities in Atlanta and New Orleans than in Los Angeles or New York. You have to ask yourself, Do I want to work as and extra? Do I want to try and build up a resume of small speaking roles? Or do I want to have the best shot at being cast in lead roles?. You have to make that choice. One thing that I can assure you is that when people say, there is less competition for acting roles in places like Atlanta and New Orleans it is false. The reason for this is that very few principal acting roles are cast in these locations, they are still vastly cast in Los Angeles (and NY). Those stats are available. So decide for yourself what level of roles you want to be go for, and move to where those roles are being cast. And always remember... chase your dreams and never let anyone tell you that you can not succeed!
