Which pan holds the measures and which pan holds the thing to be measured, grain, for instance? If cosmic order is upset, which is the more dangerous situation: losing the measures (northern pan), or losing what is to be measured (southern pan)? The Scorpion-Scales scenario suggests that the measures held in the norhern pan are lost. Imagine small weights for an ounce, five ounces, ten ounces, and so on. These weights are human constructs, like the mechanism of the balance itself. Perhaps originally the five-ounce weight was a natural object, say, a dried fig. Then, in an act of abstraction, the fig was replaced by a uniform weight. All the weights are abstractions from material to be weighed, but in being made into uniform weights, they enable humans to measure and distribute material things in a uniform and accountable way. Now imagine a tribal situation where grain is distributed according to needs, but the measure of distribution, to be uniform and fair, is determined by weighing on the scales. Now, if the tribe loses the weights, that is one thing. If it loses the grain to be weighed, that is quite another. Members of the tribe who undersand the principles of measure and balance can always come up with another set of weights, but if the grain, the material to be measured, is lost, the tribe will perish. In one reading, the Scorpion-Scales tableau suggests that when it appears that cosmic order is upset, it is because the weights (paradigms) we use to reckon our place in the cosmic order are lost or disrupted. We can survive as long as the materials, natural resources, are not lost. However, the loss of honest and uniform standards of measure (true paradigms of nature and human participation in cosmic order) can lead to a situation where distribution of resources is gravely disrupted. This is the current. This is an image of the Codex Alimentarius... Cosmic Deterrence But there is more to the stary scenario. Astride the Scorpion stands the Snaketamer, the 13th constellation. This shamanic or yogic figure is huge, looming high into the northern sky over the Scorpion. The Snaketamer, called Ophiuchus in Greek sky-lore, is graphically, astronomically, and mythologically the male equivalent to the Virgin, a figure of the same proportions disposed laterally along the ecliptic. Now, the Snaketamer seems to exert some kind of restrain on the Scorpion. His left foot is on the heart star, Antares, and his right foot, with the leg held straight and stiff, is on the stinger of that poisonous creature. He is in a shamanic trance, Serpens - the kundalini serpent. And there is more as well. This area of the sky is intensely interactive. The Archer seems also to exercising a deterrent action upon the Scorpions precipitious lunge at the crossbeam of the Scales. Aiming at the star epsilon in the lower torso of the Scorpion, the Archer sights and pulls but goes not shoot, perhaps. The sighting position has a double connotation: additional to suggesting a pre-emptive strike at the torso of the Scorpion (not the heart star, Antares, as is often claimed), his sightline brings the observing eye to the dirction of galactic center, right off the tip of the arrow, just above the stinger of the Scorpion. Through all this cosmic drama, the Goatfish looks on with a dreamy, detached air. These actions do not prevent the cosmic order from being violated, They deter the consequences of that disruption. This is the challenge facing humanity: how to exert deterrant force or pre-emptive force against those members of society who disregard the true and fair measurue in the human world, and deny the harmony of the cosmos at large, in order to pursue their private agenda of division, deceit, and domination? There is a deterrence movement. It began in 1111 CE. The warrior in service of the Goddess has ancient origins... but the warrior who confronts and defeats patriarchy is a recent historical development.
