While I still have plenty of time before I graduate, I have been searching the webs for jobs in sustainability, food safety inspection, water quality assurance, ecosystem services, Fair Trade inspection, organic certification, etc. I have been running up against a lot of roadblocks as I am discovering one simple truth: businesses that work in these types of schema that I mentioned above are, for the most part, not very technologically savvy. While I am finding interesting jobs (at a very low rate per quantity of search time) I am coming across WAY more jobs that use sustainability as a key work that are based in the world of technology, as in sustaining engineer or sustainable business which dont really have too terribly much to do with my skill set, and ultimately, only address one component of sustainability (namely the economic one!). You cant address one component of sustainability without addressing the other two sides of the triangle. Sustainability is essentially based on triple bottom line accounting...where people, profits, AND planet are addressed simultaneously. It is NOT sustainability if all three arent addressed. When one is addressed at the expense of the other two in an effort to sound green, that is defined as greenwashing. I experience it EVERY TIME I do a job search. I know there are a lot of jobs out there for me, but Im wondering when this CRUCIAL arm of science is going to be taken seriously. Every time I have a discussion with someone about what Im studying, I get one of two responses: either they are interested and have no idea what Im talking about, or they give me the impression that Im a tree hugger, and therefore, eminently dismissable.
