While I typically get annoyed with hearing media coverage and movies refer to New Orleans as the city devastated by Katrina (because we are so much more than that one horrific moment in time), on this the 9th Anniversary i feel compelled to post on it. I can remember sitting at my Aunts house with Bub and my dad in Fort Oglethorpe, GA watching the news. Praying that the what we were seeing and hearing was just a horrible dream. Frantically trying to get a hold of my mom who decided to stay behind since she was too sick to travel. It wouldnt be until 3 weeks later that I would make contact with my mom and that was completely by the grace of God! 3 weeks were at that time the worse 3 weeks of my life! I cant even begin to describe how it feels to not know whether your own mother is dead or alive for 3 weeks!! We were allowed to come home for 2 days to assess and get anything of value that was remained, before Hurricane Rita would make landfall and we both ended up at my house at the same time. I will never forget that feeling of relief. In that moment despite seeing the devastation of my own home that would need to be essentially rebuilt, I saw a light. Hurricane Katrina did many things for many people 9 years ago, what she did for me and many of the not so lucky New Orleanians??? Proved that things can always be replaced, but being able to wrap your arms around a loved one and hear their voice is EVERYTHING!!!
