While I was in Italy that first week of vacation I would find out - TopicsExpress

While I was in Italy that first week of vacation I would find out how grateful I am to know CPR. I was dining at a restaurant. My dining companion directed my attention to a man seated behind me. He was blue and not breathing. His family were panicking. I called out to staff to call an ambulance asap. I attempted to give this man the Heimlich maneuver while he was still seated which was not successful. Then I asked assistance to get the man on the floor. When he was on his back I began giving him chest compressions when an American doctor on his honeymoon identified himself to me. He then began doing the compressions while I checked patients airway. It was obstructed and he was unconscious. I was able to remove a piece of mozzarella cheese that was about six inches by four inches in length. I was then able to give him breath. Quickly he began to breath on his own and the doctor and I turned him onto his side. He remained unconscious until the ambulance arrived. I was able to see him once his vital signs were taken and he had regained consciousness. The mans family did not speak English but their hugs, tears and blessings showed their deep appreciation. The doctor and I exchanged hugs and stood in stunned shock over what had transpired. An American doctor and an Canadian nurse saved an Italian gentleman. I hope you will share this inspires you to learn CPR!!! After an nine hour plane ride home I am exhausted but on cloud nine! Donna
