While I wont pretend that Ive seen no other movie of his on repeat than Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Ive always regarded Bob Hoskins as one of the most criminally under-rated actors. Thats despite holding his own alongside the scene-chewing likes of Christopher Lloyd, Robert de Niro, Michael Caine, Dustin Hoffman and working in Oliver Stone political biopics, Spielberg escapist fantasies, Ephron romances. Hoskins never immersed in the vagaries of Hollywood self-importance. He was never above an odd song and dance number, wearing a silly costume, putting on a fake accent or condescended to the material he worked with. It saddens me to know that people will still mock him for Mario and remain unaware of the broad spectrum of work hes been in: Hollywoodland, Mona Lisa, The Long Good Friday, Mrs. Henderson Presents and Doomsday. But whats sadder still is that hes no longer with us.
