While the controversy surrounding Melissa Bachman and her infamous - TopicsExpress

While the controversy surrounding Melissa Bachman and her infamous lion kill continues, one has to ask what the difference is between hand feeding calves only to send them to slaughter and breeding lions only to send them to slaughter by hunters. Does it offend us less to see the end product on a shelf at Woolies or served as veal at your favourite Italian restaurant, as opposed to seeing it mounted on a wall. If one wants to take an ethical standpoint, how can one place value on one life over another. I dont see any pictures of Inguni Rug owners being plastered all over facebook as murderers? Theoretically yes, the yummy mummy didnt shoot it herself...but someone else did. The difference between cattle farming and trophy hunting, is that trophy hunting is of key importance to conservation in Africa by creating financial incentives to promote and retain wildlife as a land use over vast areas. Animals hunted meet a far better end than domestic stock that are herded into pens, transported to abattoirs and then killed surrounded by the sight, sound and smell of death. Wild animals are hunted in their natural habitat and, in 95% of cases, are killed instantly with one shot without even knowing that the hunter is anywhere near them. We need beef to eat, milk to drink and leather to wear, but we also need to be socially conscious and open minded that conservation of our wildlife is not all cuddly cubs and baby buck....it is grossly underfunded by governments, raped by illegal poaching and the only way to secure the future of these animals is by having the money to do so.....and unless someone out there has a cool $90 000 000 per annum to donate to this cause, professional hunting is the only way to get necessary funding. We dont have to like it, or even understand why someone would want to do it, but we do need to understand that despite how heartbreaking it may be some to see such images, its necessary for the preservation and conservation of all African animals.
