While we have been in Ecuador, we have been up at altitude on purpose -- we are about to straddle the Equator, so anything below 6,000 is HOT. We dropped into a valley for a day and got right back out -- by climbing a 2000 mountainside, complete with switchbacks. But first, we woke up to a flat tire on Seths bike (knock on wood, the first since we were in Oakland). That delayed our departure a bit but made it out early to beat some of the heat. If you look closely, you can see Seth down the hill -- this was the start of the climb that would take us about 3 hours to finish. Luckily people are friendly here, and we mustve looked like we were struggling, because within a 1km stretch we had four different cars stop give us water and gatorade! We finished in Ibarra and are staying with a fellow named Graham. He gave us a ride in the back of his pickup, about 45 minutes up the side of mountain to this amazing crater lake. It was beautiful...and nothing we would have ever found on bicycle. We are going to hang out here one more day then make a big push to Quito.
