Who tells a tale adds a point ... this is true . Many stories I learned as a child and then listened narrated by others , had very different points . Tales formerly were passed from mouth to mouth, there was no radio or any other medium . The people were generally illiterate , but always existed counters . And it was the ember , the heat of fire where everything happened . The old fireplace embers is today , different only in their equipment and their dimensions . It was rustic, earthen floors or mass of sand and lime . There was a pilheira each side where we sat . There right above the fire as part of the chimney , was the cambo , where a sort of clothesline hung up the sausages , protected by the hot air and smoke . I still remember the Cambeiro , perhaps one of the oldest wooden artifacts that existed in my grandmothers house I even got to meet . It was a piece of stud protruding from the wall obliquely , where the pots were hanging fire by an iron hook . Then came the iron trivets , where we put the pots on top . The ember was perhaps the most important part of the house . At night the family gathering heat of the fire , I , my brothers , friends and neighbors , we heard the wildest stories . And we were fascinated . My grandmother and my mother were great storytellers of stories. All always started with the same catchphrase : Once upon a time ... They did not tell stories , they numbered cases as if they were true . And we kept terrified . Were often violent , where the hero killed for trivial reasons . Own stories to the people of the middle ages, where powerful armies went out into the world to destroy nations and were received as heroes in their homeland . Practice this , we now reject . In Portugal there were many old tales that were reported as if they were true
