Whose idea was it that it is OK for cashiers and store clerks to give change back to a customer as a bundle of bills and a mixture of coins? If we traced it back in time, I betcha we would find that some faculty member in a business school made that decision and may have received a promotion or pay increase because of it. When you couple this business practice with todays instruction in math (which champions estimation) you end up with chaos in the marketplace. I brought carry-out dinners home this evening because our personal schedule dictated it. The total bill was $16.18. At the checkout, I gave the college student behind the counter $20.20 so I wouldnt fill my pocket with more coins. But she had already punched in just $20, and couldnt for the life of her figure out what she owed me in change! Her brand new cell phone even failed her and couldnt give her an answer. I finally told her to just give me four dollar bills and two pennies, and she took my word for it. I shouldnt be surprised by this incident. I found out in the heyday of teaching FORTRAN programming .that students had no concept of how to make change, and could not accurately count the number of each denomination of coin and currency should be returned to the customer for a nominal purchase of less than $20. Ah well!
