Why Dropbox Opens Up Your Private Documents When it comes to cloud storage services, privacy is always important. Well, it seems that Dropbox opens up your private documents. Although it looks like no one at Dropbox is actually reading anything, the service does open the files to create a “preview” version of the document. Regardless of whether anyone reads your stored documents or not, there are many voices expressing concern over the issue. The situation came to light when a security expert writing for WNC InfoSec Blog was playing with HoneyDocs, a new service that tags documents and tells you every time someone opens it. A bunch of files got uploaded to Dropbox and all files with a .doc extension appeared to have been opened. “Dropbox allows people to open and preview files from their browser. This blog post relates to back end processes that automatically create these document previews, making it easier for people to view docs within their Dropbox,” a spokesperson told Business Insider. Given the current debate on the topic of privacy, such a discovery doesn’t bode well for Dropbox.
