Why Ilaje / Ese Odo Bye-Election Was Declared Inconclusive, INEC Explains The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has explained why Saturday’s Ilaje/Ese Odo Federal Constituency bye-election was declared inconclusive despite the emergence of a winner. The Returning Officer for the election, Professor Babatunde Adeyemi offered the explanation while announcing the result in Igbokoda on Sunday (today). He said the election was declared inconclusive based on the fact that the gap between the Labour Party candidate, Kolade Akinjo who came first and PDP’s Adewale Kukute was minimal compared to the number of registered voters in areas where election could not hold. Akinjo polled a total of 23,926 votes while Kukute had 22,628 votes. Professor Adeyemi explained that Akinjo could not be returned as the winner despite having the highest number of votes as the electoral laws of Nigeria empowers INEC to declare such elections inconclusive. Adeyemi also disclosed that the date for a supplementary election in areas where election could not hold will be announced by INEC.
