Why are we NOT surprised: allafrica/stories/201401250169.html Maputo — Five Mozambican policemen have been detained in the southern province of Gaza for their role in an armed robbery and in trafficking in rhinoceros horns, according to a report in Fridays issue of the independent weekly “Savana”. According to the papers sources, the policemen received a denunciation that rhino horns were stored in the house of a man believed to be a poacher in the town of Massingir. They raided the house, without any warrant, and inside found just one rhino horn. The head of operations in the Gaza provincial police command, Candido Mazive, the paper claims, then arranged the sale of the horn. It is no clear how much it was sold for, but Mazive distributed among his four accomplices 300,000 meticais (about 9,930 US dollars) from the sale. The Massingir district police commander allegedly received 55,000 meticais, and the head of the Massingir brigade of the Criminal Investigation Police (PIC) received 35,000. The others involved were a PIC agent, a member of the traffic police and the driver of the car used in the crime. Contacted by “Savana”, Gaza police spokesperson Jaime Langa said he knew nothing about the incident, while the Gaza provincial commander, Joao Manguele, refused to make any comment. But in a television interview, the director of order in the provincial command, confirmed the involvement of five senior policemen, and did not rule out the possibility that others too might be involved.
