Why are you allowing your bosses to shaft you?...... Job insecurity and an implicit need to work longer hours are just some of the issues concerning Australian workers, the report from The Australia Institute reveals. At a cost equal to $110 billion in free labour each year, Aussie workers are handing over their free time in order to please their bosses who are legally required to pay them for the work, the institutes executive director Richard Denniss told Fairfax . Whether they realise it or not Australians are far more generous to their employer than they are to any charity, he said. Nearly half of all Australians are expected to work longer hours yet 27 percent feel insecure in their position, the survey of 1000 people from across the country found. The survey also reveals it is not enough to raise the idea of a maintaining a work-life balance with employees — employers, industry groups and governments needed to take the issue more seriously, Dr Denniss said. A simple thing they could do is require all large companies to survey their employees each year on work-life balance and publish those surveys on their websites, he said. In France earlier this year it was made illegal for employers to contact their staff outside of their regular working hours. The law also protected staff from retribution if they chose to ignore phones calls and emails in their personal time. finance.ninemsn.au/newsbusiness/aap/8930790/bosses-owe-aussie-workers-9-5k-a-year-in-unpaid-overtime-study
