Why do I like to walk in the woods? How can I be away from the instruments of man? To live without cable, no TV or cell...no beating the drums or ringing of bells. Somewhere far from the deafening roar is a place we can hear God. Under the lush green canopy of the forest, alongside a crystal clear stream, is that place where my soul can drift quietly from my earthen vessel to play with a child-like fervor amongst the trees. It floats, effortless and free, through the thick cloud of fern that blankets the forest floor, and skips gaily across the smooth round river stones that sparkle like fireflies, as the cold clear water tumbles along on its way to the sea. Only here can my spirit be free to brush against the branches of a mighty oak, or gently caress the down-soft petals of a wild flower. Free from the interference of machines, my ears are able to discern the symphony of spiritual music which wafts along happily on the warm summer breeze as the branches strike out a rhythm and the leaves sing softly in concert with the birds. High upon the mountain I feel boundless joy, but that can quickly turn to mourning upon descending in to a graveyard of majestic hemlocks. From their dying roots, new life is born, leaping from the ground, unimpeded, without regard to what has been. They will keep no records of their rise, or pay any homage to the once mighty trees that sprang to life and had their being long before the industrial progress of men. How much more precious is life when the only thing you are required to be is what you are. That is the lesson of the wilderness. To experience God on earth, you must be where he has made you, among the instruments of his creation . You must believe that he exists and focus your attention on the unseen things of this world. Each time I visit the forest I am changed. I am reminded that there is a song that can be heard by anyone, but remains forever hidden from those who will not listen.
