Why do human beings tend to respond more acutely and quickly to stimuli from evil spirits than to stimuli from the Holy Spirit? Many people might have heard of Pavlovs dog, one of the most famous behavior psychology experiments. What the experiment is about is simply this: In classical conditioning, there are an unconditioned stimulus, a conditioned/neutral stimulus, an unconditioned response, and a conditioned response. When an unconditioned stimulus, food, is given to a dog, the dog shows an unconditioned response, salivation. It is an unlearned and natural reflex to an external stimulus. Now, when a conditioned/neutral stimulus, the sound of a bell ringing, is presented with the unconditioned stimuli (food), and if this procedure is repeated, the dog eventually exhibits the unconditioned response (salivation) to the conditioned/neutral stimulus (the bell) even in the absence of the unconditioned stimuli (food). Now this response to the conditioned stimuli is a learned reflex, and called a conditioned response. Having given the logic of classical conditioning, I will repeat my question in another way: Why do human beings tend to give unconditioned responses to conditioned stimuli from evil spirits but conditioned responses to unconditioned stimuli from the Holy Spirit? Sorry to give you an example of a dog, but my point is that the journey of a Christians life is full of external stimuli, and internal, spiritual responses. We undergo lots of things, encounter lots of people, we witness or hear things whether we do or do not want to, we grow up, and we get purged, transformed, justified, and sanctified. When we are faced with or ended up in situations we do not like or want, we use a beautified or grand expression, tests, temptations, or discipline. We tend to focus much on the stimuli that give us frustration of hard times, and magnify them, making ourselves who are faced with them grandiose. The problem starts here. Our attitude before the external stimuli that we usually call suffering or tests is quite different from that of Jesus who was tested in the wilderness. His attitude before the three temptations is like this, Go ahead, Its not gonna work as you expect, I wont buy it or get agitated It may sound arrogant, but it is an attitude that comes only after the I, the huge ego inside, dies, and focus is entirely on Gods kingdom. Jesus, who only looked for Gods will, thus was neither tempted nor emotionally provoked. That way he was emotionally, mentally, and spiritually secure and stable. Human beings magnify the self rather than the Holy Spirit inside them, and exhibit unconditioned responses (getting emotionally, mentally, and spiritually stirred up, confused, exasperated, or depressed) focusing on and responding keenly to the stimuli from Satan. If it is a test/discipline (set/conditioned stimuli), the providence and sovereignty of God who allowed that moment (unconditioned stimuli) gets ignored or unnoticed because of the self that has got so much grandiose and magnified. But we know it. And we even know how to obey. We dont see it and we dont understand it, but we know what to do to get to heaven (learned/conditioned response). We are obviously Gods creation, but how did human response to the Father become a learned response? Have we lost our identity as His creation in this age of chaos from postmodernism? We need to check carefully to whom we are responding and how we are responding as Gods creation. Somehow I feel this world is such a setting to block intimate communication between God and us. -무엇에 어떻게 반응하는가 우리는 우리의 마음에 들지 않는 상황이 닥치거나, 혹은 우리가 생각하고 바라던대로의 상황이 오지 않을 때, 시험에 들었다고 미화된 혹은 웅장한 표현을 쓴다. 나를 어렵게 하고 힘들게 하는 stimulus만 쏙쏙 골라 극대화시키고 그 속에서 그것에 맞서야 하는 나 자신은 grandiose화 되어있다. 문제는 여기에서 시작한다. 우리가 흔히 고난이나 시험이라고 하는 stimuli를 대하는 우리의 태도는, 광야에서 시험을 받으신 예수님의 반응과는 너무나 다르다. 광야에서의 세가지 시험/유혹을 대하는 예수님의 태도는 흡사 이렇다, 나는 네가 던지는 떡밥을 물지도 않을 거고, 네가 하는 말에 입질이 오지도 않는다. 거만하게 들릴지도 모르지만, 사실 이것은 내 속에 내 자아는 죽었고 나의 모든 것이 하나님 나라에 초점이 맞춰져 있는 상태에서 가능한 반응이다. 오로지 아버지의 뜻만을 바라보셨던 예수님은, 그래서 마귀의 유혹에 솔깃하지도 않으셨고 마귀의 조롱에 감정적으로 도발되지도 않으셨다. 우리는 당신은 사랑 받기 위해 태어났다고 흥얼거리며 내 속에서 성령님보다 내 자아를 더 크게 만들어 사탄으로부터 오는 온갖 stimuli에 기가 막히게 민감하게 초점을 맞춰 감정적으로나 정신적으로나 영적으로나 이리저리 흔들리고, 혼란스러워하고, 분노하고, 우울해하는 unconditioned response를 보인다. 그것이 시험이라면 (conditioned stimuli), 그 시험을 허락하신 하나님의 섭리와 주권이 있는데 (unconditioned stimuli), 너무나 커져 있는 자아에게는 그것이 보이지 않는다. 하지만 우리는 머리로는 안다. 게다가 순종할 줄도 안다. 이해도 안 가고 보이지도 않는데, 일단 어떻게 해야 천국에 가는지는 아는 것이다. (learned/conditioned response). 우리는 분명히 하나님의 창조물인데, 하나님에 대한 반응이 왜 learned response가 되어야 하는가? 포스트모더니즘이 주는 혼란의 시대 속에서 우리는 창조물로서의 우리의 아이텐티티를 잃어버린 것인가? 어쩐지 이 세상은 하나님과의 친밀한 의사소통을 가로막는 세팅이라는 생각이 든다. 사탄의 계략에 재빠르고 민감하게 반응하기보다 하나님의 뜻과 성령님의 음성에 더 호흡처럼 반응하는 창조물이 되어야 한다. 그것이 아무것도 아닌 존재인 우리가, 예수님처럼 세상을 이기는 방법이고, 천국을 이루는 방법이다. (아니... 하다못해 덜 친한 사람보다 더 친한 사람한테 더 잘 반응할 거 아니야...)
