Why do so many people have babies christened? Most people are - TopicsExpress

Why do so many people have babies christened? Most people are proud of being in a free country but we wish to force a religious idea on a child that is unable to make their own decisions. Even people that don’t go to church do it. Why would parents and godparents that have no real interest or in religion still go into a church for a few weeks so they can then make vows to lead a child through Christianity and the just forget all about it until they have another child that ‘needs’ to be christened? I’m not trying to offend anyone who has had a child christened, but do we ever really analyse why we do this? Surely it is a tradition going back to when we were a secular Christian state... YOU WILL BE THIS RELIGION!!!... just like countries we are quick to criticise these days. But surely, on a personal basis, we are taking the same attitude ourselves whenever we christen a baby and tell them they are going to be a Christian (which is basically what we are doing) Maybe I’m missing something but isn’t it time to move on? Even if parents are committed Christians should they not let their child grow up and make their own religious decisions when they are old enough and able to do so? Let them be christened when they are old and wise enough to decide that is the path in life they wish to take. Or let them decide not to. Or choose another road. Isn’t that something we should be proud to do, living in a free state where we can make our own personal choices?
