Why do we remember 9/11? I understand the conventional reasons: It was an attack on the United States, people died, its a show of patriotism, etc. As much as those things, I think we remember 9/11 because it stood out in our minds at the time, and because it was a tragedy. This is all fine, but many more people died in another greater tragedy; a time before the 1950s. Ive always found it odd that there isnt a day remembering all the people who starved in third world countries before the green revolution, the victims of a time without GMOs or the people who died of smallpox, polio or small infections before modern medical technology, the victims of an age before modern medicine. These tragedies all had more victims than 9/11, so why dont we remember them. There are plenty of tragedies like this that we dont take a day to remember because they did not occur all at one time and because at one time they were normal. What could we remember then if not a single day of tragedy? Why not a single day of hope? Every year, we take certain days and moments to reflect on single day tragedies that hurt the nation and the world and all the lives lost, but we rarely take time to think about the benefits of the twentieth century and all the lives saved. Because of that, Id like to make Wednesday, September 17th unofficial capital and finished products day. Lets take a moment on this day to think about the polio vaccine, GMOs, chemotherapy, the moon landing, capitalism, cell phones and how all these pieces of capital and products and all the capital that went into them have affected our lives and that of those around us. Lets remember the victories and men who make the modern world. Happy pre-capital day, everyone.
