Why do you ask whether Joshua was wearing his helmet when he wrecked? The slight shake of your head when you asked let me know your assumptions are already firmly in place. Do you need me to say it to make you feel better? Is it somehow his own fault if he wasnt wearing a helmet? If he wasnt wearing a helmet, would you even think to yourself that he asked for it? Deserved it? Because people who do the right things get rewarded and bad things only happen to bad people, right? No such thing would *ever* happen to your kid. I bet - at least for a minute - you were confused and maybe a little angry at Robin Williams, werent you? I know something that you dont. Oh, you probably think you do. And you may have an inkling on some level. But you dont know it like I do. This notion and I? Weve spent a lot of time together. We are getting nice and comfy with each other. Even after I tell you, you wont understand. At least not until its time for you to. Ready? Here it is. Joshua was wearing his helmet. And it was a sunny day in April. A Wednesday. Three in the afternoon. The moral of this story is that ultimately, those rules that make you feel safe are meaningless. You can do every single thing right and life will *still* kick your teeth in. Not even your gym membership and organic veggies can save you. No one here gets out alive. To quote my husband, Fair is not a function of the universe. For those of us who have buried our children-even the ones who werent wearing a helmet-this is painfully and ragingly clear.
