Why is our government spying on us? And what does spying mean? Our government is doing exactly what we pay them to do. Trying to keep us safe. Today that means the management of information and the ability to spot threats. The corner cop is a great asset to a city but worthless in the battle against terrorism. The United States has had over 1100 terror attacks spotted and defused during the last 2 years by the FBI, CIA and NSA. What if half of those came to an unsuccessful conclusion? How about just 1/3? Would it be ok if we had just two airports a year blown up? What we cant stop is the Boston Marathon type bomber. They are individuals acting on their own. What we can stop, and we are very effectively stoping them, are the foreign or domestic groups with connections to other groups. The reason why is they have to communicate. And one of the ways they do that is email and posts to websites and blogs. Without our ability to monitor that and concentrate the information we would be dying in thousands. It hurts to know we have given up some freedom from examination. However, unless you are posting or emailing with key words that you likely would never use, the computer simply passes you by. Its not like some person is sifting billions of pieces of information every day. Its all computers based at Ft. Meade MD. If they see a pattern it goes to a higher level program to review in context. If that is a positive then, and only then does a person review it. If its still a positive, and most are not, it goes to the FBI for investigation. Then, only if the FBI thinks there is a credible threat do they take action. So, what rights have you lost, really? You have less privacy, but every email you send is handled by machines anyway. There is a copy of everything you do on the net living there pretty much forever. So, yes, its a bit creepy to think that BIG GOVERNMENT IS WATCHING US. But as you see on so many bumper stickers, Freedom is not free. Without our intelligence agencies guarding us we would be screaming for someone to take action. Well, they are. They are preventing tragedy. Not just trying to catch the people that bombed the World Trade Center after it was in ashes.
