Wigan Casino, I met Jim McClusky who was the lead singer of Wigan’s Ovation some years ago when Mick Fitzpatrick and I decided to raise a bit of money for a charity, the concept was brilliant and it consisted of donations of Northernsoul memorabilia that were to be auctioned off and the donator would choose the charity. This was quite some time ago and before the massive wave of Born Again Soulies, we had all sorts of memorabilia pledged records, bricks, rare tapes, badges and patches and all of the things that were quite hard to find at that time and certainly before the Wigan Re-enactment Society’s demand for replica tat, the stuff we had pledged was part of peoples souls. Jim McClusky of Wigan’s Ovation rang me to tell of a very unusual piece of Northernsoul memorabilia that he had and wanted to donate, he told me this story….. In the early days of The Casino, Mike Walker, who was the manager of Wigan Casino and Russ Winstanley were deciding on a “Keep sake” that the Casino goers could buy as a memento of their visit, the two items under consideration were “Badges” and a “T-Shirt” the T-Shirt would have a silk screen print of the Casino on the front and one was produced locally and Jim McClusky was to wear it on stage at The Casino, we of course all know that the “Badge” was chosen over the T-Shirt and Jim McClusky was left with a brand new un worn T-shirt that was folded up and placed at the bottom of a draw to be forgotten about. Jim McClusky gave me the T-Shirt nearly two decades ago along with a letter of authenticity and I have this as my little piece of Wigan Casino. A little bit better than a key ring or mug don’t you think?
