Wildlife Resources Division - GADNRs Jessica McGuire and Robert Horan shot this video of a red-cockaded woodpecker through a spotting scope while translocating six of the rare birds from Ft. Stewart to Silver Lake WMA this week. Silver Lake is the first state-owned property with red-cockaded woodpeckers, an endangered species. These woodpeckers forage in the quality longleaf and wiregrass habitat on the area. Our Nongame Conservation Section has been moving birds to the area, and through more frequent controlled burns, installing additional recruitment clusters and careful forest management, the hope is that Silver Lake will eventually sustain about 50 family groups of red-cockaded woodpeckers!
