Will my gun wear more in a Kydex holster than a Leather/Nylon - TopicsExpress

Will my gun wear more in a Kydex holster than a Leather/Nylon etc... holster? - I get asked this question very often, so heres my personal opinion on the subject. First off we need to understand the differences between finish wear and material/mechanical wear. Finish wear will happen regardless of what material your holster is made of due to the friction that happens between your gun and the inside of the holster. This finish wear can actually be greater with a soft material such as leather, suede, nylon or Cordura etc... If these porous materials absorb gun oils, solvents or sweat, then combine with dust and grit, they will form a type of grinding paste! Now every time you draw or re-holster your gun, you will be sanding a bit of your finish off. It can be very difficult to remove/wash these substances out of these holster materials but a Kydex holster can be washed out very easily with warm water and a little dish wash liquid. When new, you may find certain high points on your gun shaving small amounts of Kydex from the inside of your new holster, these high points in turn will possibly have the finish worn off them. This is a normal bedding in process and shouldnt last for more than a few draws and re-holsterings. Once this bedding in process is complete very little further finish wear takes place. Kydex can also be treated with a silicon type spray to add extra lubrication to the inside of the holster and slick up the draw. No holster should ever cause mechanical wear to your weapon! If this is happening then your are probably trying to carry your gun in a holster designed and/or moulded for another type/design/action of pistol/revolver! Stop doing this right now!!! One last thought, if you are training with your firearm regularly (which you should take every feasible opportunity to do!) it is extremely unlikely that the fresh out of the box finish can be maintained, it will rather take on a patina unique to you and the use you put it to, reminding you of the training you have done, sport shooting matches you competed in and possibly the time(s) it saved your life! The only way to guarantee a pristine finish for ever is to coat your gun in oil, wrap it in silk and never let it leave your safe! Stay safe out there guys, train hard & fight easy. Geoff.
