William James (Bill) Henderson joined the Fire Service in 1939 at Liverpool, in the United Kingdom. He served through World War II and progressed through the ranks to become an Inspector, Home Office (UK). In 1957, Bill moved to New Zealand to take up the position of Commandant of the New Zealand Fire Service Training College in Island Bay, and was also appointed Deputy Chief Fire Service Officer. In 1962, he was appointed Chief Fire Officer, Wellington Fire Brigade where he remained until 1973 when he was appointed Chief Fire Service Officer for New Zealand. When the Fire Service Commission was established in 1975, Bill was appointed a Fire Commissioner. He retired from that position in 1980 and was made a Life Honorary Member of the UFBA at the Association’s Conference that year in Blenheim in New Zealand’s South Island. In July 1981 Bill Henderson was appointed Director, Northern Territory Fire Service in Darwin, a position he held until July 1983, at which time he returned to New Zealand and retired to Waikanae, north of Wellington. Bill Henderson passed away at Churtonleigh Hospital, Wellington on 18 June 2009 at the age of 91 years.
