“Wingtips” from the Editor Airshow China All Air shows in the international calendar follow the same template to be commercially successful by providing a forum for companies to meet with their customers and showcase the capability of their products. China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition (namely Airshow China) has been featuring the display of Chinas home-grown military hardware, trade talks, technological exchange and flying displays since 1996. This show is held every even-number year in their southern city of Zhuhai. Airshow China 2014 took place from 11th to 16th November, 2014. China is one of the leading emerging markets and over the last few years Western companies have visited the country to explore business opportunities as well as for opening up offices on China shores. Furthermore, many Chinese companies are seeking investment from the west or looking to build long standing international partnerships. As the Chinese economy grows and domestic travel increases, the Chinese aviation industry is set to expand by an average of 30% a year, making it an attractive market to break into. For almost 20 years Airshow China has been a showcase for the country’s homegrown hardware and a marketplace for those interested in selling to the world’s most populous country. As the country tries to climb into the high-end arms market, it has been eager to display fighters, missiles and drones that it hopes will demonstrate how China can compete on the global stage. China accounts for about one-quarter of Airbus and Boeing single-aisle aircraft deliveries annually, and is set to be their second-largest market outside the USA. With their 156 seat Comac C919 aircraft program in progress, China intends to make its mark in the large airliner business dominated globally by industry heavyweights, Airbus and Boeing. Assembly of a C919 prototype is under way, aiming at an end-2015 first flight target and be marketable by 2020. They will of course face very tough competition with Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 variants. This month’s Newsletter covers the civil and military hardware manufacturing initiatives showcased by China at their ‘Airshow China 2014’. While China has been making substantial effort to be a global player in the field of development and manufacture of aviation products, the Aviation Industry in India has a long way to go before we can become a serious player in the Indian and global market. With the current thrust on ‘Make in India’, liberalized investment policies and tax incentives, the private sector initiatives in Aviation Industry are expected to get a major boost, both for the defence and civil aviation projects. Aero India airshow which has been held at Bengaluru since 1996 has certainly carved a niche for itself globally as a premier aerospace exhibition. With participation of over 750 companies from India and abroad in the tenth edition of Aero India airshow scheduled from 18th to 22nd Feb 2015, we look forward to a major fillip for our Aviation Industry. Wish you all Merry Christmas and many happy landings in the New Year. Chinese defence companies and the Peoples Liberation Armys air force also put the latest weaponry on parade at the countrys premier Zhuhai airshow this week, including the new J-31 stealth fighter and its biggest-ever military transport plane. For foreign companies, the airshow offered a chance to tap a market in which air travel grew by an annual 11 percent last year to 350 million passengers -- a gold mine for plane makers such as Europes Airbus and Boeing of the United States. Just days before the show, Airbus announced a $10 billion deal for China Aircraft Leasing Co. to buy 100 planes from its A320 family. US rival Boeing forecasts China will need over 6,000 new airplanes valued at $870 billion over the next 20 years. thedailystar.net/business/firms-flock-to-fast-growing-aviation-market-in-china-49826 China Prepares for Future Aviation Growth With Avionics, Infrastructure Investments Over the next two decades, China will become the worlds largest air passenger market, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), who projects the country will surpass the United States by adding 16.9 billion new passengers. To accommodate the massive growth in the number of aircraft flying into and out of China, the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) has implemented avionics equipage requirements for its domestic airlines, presenting big opportunities for well-established American and European avionics manufacturers. Thales will not be the only avionics company benefiting from CAACs HUD requirement either. Rockwell Collins is the supplier of HUDs for the Boeing 737, 777 and 787, thus, the Chinese carriers adding Boeing air transport aircraft to their fleets over the next decade will receive one of their displays. Through 2025, IATA expects one third of all new production aircraft from the major OEMs to be delivered to Chinese operators.Honeywell is also seeing opportunities for growth in China. Currently Honeywell employs about 400 aerospace engineers in its research and product centers in China, with that number expected to increase to over 700 by 2017. aviationtoday/av/commercial/83498.html?hq_e=el&hq_m=2980951&hq_l=10&hq_v=439541dcc3#.VGWA0zSUebs Bombardier open to Chinese assembly line Building a final assembly line could be “the next logical step” for Bombardier in China. The eco-friendly 2-seat RX1E is scheduled to receive its airworthiness certification before the end of this year and the company has high-hopes for its success in both the domestic and international markets. The electric aircraft runs on electric motors, with electricity coming from fuel cells, solar cells, ultra capacitors, power beaming or batteries. With a maximum takeoff weight of 480 kg and a cruise speed of up to 160 kilometers per hour, the RX1E can fly 90 minutes based on a full charging of its batteries. It is able to carry loads for 230 km and fly at an altitude of nearly 3,000 meters. The convenience of use, easy maintenance, low operating costs, high safety levels and eco-friendliness will bring make the RX1E and extremely attractive aircraft for many buyers. It will also service a wide range of purposes, for example police patrols, flight training, entertainment and mapping surveys. It is estimated that the Chinese market will need at least 1,000 RX1Es to meet the demand from general aviation businesses. The plane, together with a set of batteries, will sell for nearly 1 million yuan ($163,000). manufacturingglobal/technology/240/Chinese-electric-aircraft-to-enter-mass-production-after-international-interest Zhuhai 2014: Defense Technology Banquet The biennial Zhuhai air show was a banquet for observers of Chinese defense technology.
