Wishing my dear Grandma a happy 95th birthday in Heaven. (If anyone could make the list, she is most definitely there.) To the woman who loved music, stories, singing and Robert Browning poems--the one who adored her family and praised her maker--the one who enjoyed coffee with cream, white daisies and (in her early years) gymnastics--the one who enjoyed a clever joke, a Cryptoquip puzzle, and an unbelievable sale--the one who admired Troy Polamalu, and disliked Tom Brady--the one who took her first flight in her 50s--the one who created birthday scavenger hunts for her children--perhaps the only one who could pull off a hot pink leopard print robe--who stood before the Berlin Wall weeks before it fell--the one who refused a marriage proposal at 23 because she was much too young!--the one who was ever so proud of her Swiss heritage, her conservative political leanings, and her alma mater, Carnegie Tech--the one who, at 85, still eagerly attended my choir concerts at Penn State--the one who could effortlessly guilt you into watching (mostly good) old movies--who read more books about Thomas Jefferson than I knew existed--the one who appeared so youthful alongside her high school classmates at reunions--the one who was quick to offer comfort, an opinion or dessert--the one who built a life with Papa, full of family, friends, adventure, faith and wisdom: you are a shining example of a life well-lived. Those of us who knew you (how lucky we are!) have been equally blessed and changed by your gentleness, stubbornness, graciousness and tenacity.
