Latest News | News Break Nigeria Pharrell Williams is the latest singing sensation to join National Broadcasting Company’s “The Voice.” The musician will replace longtime judge, Cee Lo Green, on the singing competition’s upcoming 7th season. The show broke the news on Twitter during the week. Williams was behind the two tracks that were each dubbed “the song of the summer” (Get Lucky and Blurred Lines) last year. Williams also helped Hans Zimmer score the soundtrack of next summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. He wrote both Despicable Me soundtracks and was nominated for an Oscar for Happy, a song from Despicable Me 2. His latest album, “G I R L,” was released on March 3, 2014. Green announced his departure from the hit reality show on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in February. The Voice is an American reality television singing competition broadcast on NBC. Based on the original The Voice of Holland, the concept of the series is to find new singing talent (solo or duets) contested by aspiring singers, age 15 or over, drawn from public auditions. The winner is determined by viewers, who voting through the telephone, Internet, text message, and iTunes Store purchases of artists’ performances. The winners receive $100,000 (about N17m) and a record deal with Universal Music Group for winning the competition. Williams getting lucky Pharrell Williams was born on April 5, 1973 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The oldest of three sons, Williams began his career in partnership with childhood friend, Chad Hugo. The duo established the production company, The Neptunes, to promote and sell the work of pop, hip-hop and R&B artists. Williams is also the lead vocalist and drummer for the rock band N.E.R.D. His debut single, Frontin’, appeared in 2003; his debut album, In My Mind, hit the charts in 2006. He has received dozens of other nominations and awards. In 2014, Williams won four Grammys, out of eight nominations. He won the Grammy for Producer of the Year, Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Group Performance. Williams is an extremely successful recording artist, producer, musician and fashion designer who has a net worth of $80m. Williams’ Supercars Williams has many supercars, but his favourite ones are clearly the Rolls-Royce Phantom and Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, as he often drives them. He bought one of the first Phantoms and stuck it centre stage in his Drop It Like It’s Hot video. He likes the Phantom and the Phantom Drophead Coupe because according to him, “every stitch and every tiny detail are brilliant. It’s traditional and consistent quality. They spare nothing. Also, you can drive it just how you’re feeling. It can be a luxury vehicle or you can really put your foot in it and it darts out like an arrow. I had a Bentley but it wasn’t for me. At the end of the day, a Rolls is a Rolls.” Williams prefers his car to have a black exterior and a red interior. “Black is my colour, it’s very crisp. Red makes a statement. Hip hop is red. R&B is blue. My first Phantom had a triple black exterior and a pigeon blood interior. It’s still the only one out there.” In Drop It Like It’s Hot, he rapped about the “inside tan like California sand.” He drives his Drophead Coupe but takes a backseat in the Phantom. As well as the powerful refinement of the Phantom, Williams enjoys the blood ‘n’ guts savagery of supercars. Williams also has McLaren Mercedes SLR and a Ferrari Enzo. He once said that he likes the McLaren Mercedes car because it handles like an S Class and serves as a supercar too. As for the Ferrari Enzo, Williams likened it to being in a spaceship or a stealth bomber. The Ferrari Enzo is a 2003 car, with only 400 produced. In spite of its age, the car is still selling for $1.2m (about N204m). And the buyer has to have owned two Ferraris before buying an Enzo. Williams’ Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR cost $495,000 (about N84m). Meanwhile, he also owns a Hybrid GMC Yukon. However, Williams’ dream car is the Bugatti Veyron, which he once described as something special. Speed is something Williams appreciates more and more as he has recently been spotted at car races. He was also at the American Grand Prix in Indianapolis recently. The “Happy Guy’s” Home Pharrell Williams owns a luxury penthouse apartment in Miami which he reportedly bought for a whopping $12m (about N2bn). The building is located on the 40th floor of the Bristol Tower in Miami’s business district, Brickell. The 9,080-square-foot luxury high-rise unit is complete with five bedrooms, six-and-a-half bathrooms, a home theatre and penthouse pool. A terrace with sprawling vistas of the Miami skyline and Biscayne Bay can be seen through floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the home, which was built in 1993. Dark wood, granite countertops and stainless steel appliances furnish the kitchen. Bathrooms are lined with marble while hardwood floors feature throughout. The home also comes with a four-car garage and community tennis courts. Other community features include a picnic area, bike storage, bike/jog path, child play area, community room, library, pool, sauna and, of course, a doorman. Williams, 39, recently spoke to W magazine about living in what editors called “the world’s most luxurious tree fort”. “Living your life 40 floors up, looking out every day on ocean and skies, you see the world from a different point of view,” he told the magazine. Since moving into the home, Williams has furnished it with his massive art collection, including works from Takashi Murakami and Keith Haring.
