Wishing my team mate sammy all the best! Quiet Achiever to make some noise Smithys gym is filled with numerous title belts, big names and history to match any gym in the World - but its one of the quiet achievers that is one of the most respected and liked members of the ever growing professional boxing team. Sam The Philosopher Williams, is quiet, unassuming, no frills but in his own almost silent way beats the heart of a champion in the making. Sam Williams (left) lands a jab on Jarrett Owen. Brendon Smith has been in the corner of many great fighters, Katsidis, Sherrington, Ntshingila just to name a few - but mention the name of Sammy Williams and Smiths face instantly lights up. If I could have 100 Sammy Williams in my gym I would be the happiest trainer in the World, an animated Smith said. This is a special young man, outside this gym - hes a relative unknown in the boxing world, but for those of us behind closed doors we know what the philosopher is capable of and I know he will prove that to everyone else in time. As an amateur Williams record was nothing to write home about, but what the stats dont show is who he fought and how often he was the man stepping up to take on all comers. Queensland Champions, Australian Champions, State and National golden gloves holders - hes fought them all and given many their toughest tests. On short notice, Williams was called up to compete in the National Indigenous Championships. He proved to be more than just late call up winning the title. Sammy is one of the hardest workers and toughest fighters Ive come across, Smith said. In the amateurs he ducked no one - he fought the best and mixed it with the best in this country. For Williams - as you can understand, he doesnt know what the fuss is all about. Its pretty simple for me, I respect the sport,I respect my trainer, I respect my opponent, when the bell rings I put everything on the line. Williams said. At the final bell, you win or lose - celebrate or commiserate with your team, then on Monday Ill be there at the front of the gym waiting for the doors to open ready to do it all again. Williams has had just the one pro fight thus far - a draw against Jarrett Owen who also fought Brayd Smith for the WBC Youth Silver title. For fight number two he will meet Tarees Alister Lardner over three rounds at Rumours International on October thirty one. Williams (right) draws with Owen. I learnt a lot from that fight and that experience will help me in my next fight, hopefully I can get the first win of my career. Williams said. Lardner has a huge advantage in experience, this will be seventh professional bout. Among His most notable bouts - he went the distance in a majority points loss to current WBC Asian Boxing Council Continental title holder and former Queensland and Australian Champion Waylon Law. However Brendon Smith is confident Williams is up to the challenge. We respect Alister Lardner, you just have to watch his bout with Waylon Law to see how much ability he has. Smith said. Sammy has had a faultless preparation, hes sparred with Jack Asis, Brayd Smith, Will Young and all of our boys roughly around the feather to welter weight limits and he more than holds his own. If Sammy does everything right, I think he can have his hand raised at the end of this fight. Moving forward you wont see the best of Sammy until we get him into bouts over longer rounds - hes going to be a very good long distance fighter I have no doubt about that, Smith said. Rest assured the quiet achiever of Smithys Gym is ready to be heard, dont miss his 3 round contest against Alister Lardner on the Smithy Brings the Big Fights8 card on October 31. Tickets to the event are available now from Smithys Gym ph 46 378 298 at $95 for Ringside A, $75 for Ringside B and $55 for General seats.
