With all of the current reporting on Ebola, I have been thinking - TopicsExpress

With all of the current reporting on Ebola, I have been thinking about the Great Black Death of the Middle Ages. Even a cursory examination of history demonstrates how vulnerable humanity is to a pandemic that can change everything. One of the interviews on NPR this morning was with a researcher who made the simple observation that, the more cases of Ebola that occur, the greater the likelihood that the virus can undergo a mutation. Right now we are at a low level of contagion: contact with the bodily fluids of a victim are required for transmission. But any virus can potentially gain new avenues of replication, including the frightening possibility of going pneumonic (namely, being spread on the breeze). Here you see a picture of me in Burgos, Spain, sitting next to a sobering bronze statue of St. Roch as a pilgrim on his way to Santiago. He is covered, from head to foot, with the buboes that give the Bubonic Plague its name. A momento mori from last years journey.
