With great media fanfare, the president last week rolled out his My Brothers Keeper initiative. He says its a voluntary program to help at-risk black teens. Sounds great, but thats not the whole story. Turns out the programs centerpiece is school discipline reform, which entails a lot of involuntary compliance by school districts. Obama complains black kids are nearly four times as likely to be suspended from school as white kids, suggesting (wrongly) this is due to racism. To that end, Obama says hes been working with schools on alternatives to suspensions. No, hes been threatening them. By our count, the administration has sued more than a dozen school districts for alleged racial profiling in discipline, and is targeting hundreds for investigation. The president didnt mention in his speech that a new Education Department rule will require every public school district to report suspension and expulsion data by race. Nor did he say the department also wants to know how often black students are put in handcuffs or other restraints on campus vs. white students. Once Obamas race cops compile their discrimination database, every school district in the country will come under intense political pressure to scrap discipline at the expense of classroom safety. And every black kid will have a built-in excuse for bad behavior: racism. Under My Brothers Keeper, Obama will rechannel some $200 million in foundation money to leftist groups like the Dignity in Schools Campaign, which trains educators to be more sensitive to the cultural needs of minority students and to rethink removing even the most violent from class. news.investors/ibd-editorials/030314-691891-obama-brothers-keeper-program-calls-for-curbing-black-suspensions.htm
